When you shop for a new air conditioner, you’ll see an efficiency rating called SEER2. In South Florida — where air conditioning runs for most of the year — that number can have a real impact on your energy bills. Here’s what it means and how to use it.
What is SEER2?
SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. It measures how much cooling a system delivers for each unit of electricity it uses over a typical cooling season. The higher the number, the more efficient the system.
SEER2 replaced the older SEER rating in 2023. The new test procedure better reflects real-world conditions, such as the resistance of typical ductwork, so SEER2 numbers are slightly lower than the old SEER numbers for the same equipment.
Minimum efficiency in Florida
Federal efficiency standards are set by region. Florida is in the Southeast region, which has higher minimums than the northern states. Since January 1, 2023, new split-system central air conditioners installed in the Southeast must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 for most residential sizes (under 45,000 BTU/h) and 13.8 SEER2 for larger systems.
Is higher efficiency worth it in Miami?
Because South Florida systems run so many hours a year, efficiency upgrades tend to pay back faster here than in milder climates. Consider:
- How long you plan to stay: the longer you own the home, the more you benefit from lower operating costs.
- How much you use the AC: homes that run cooling nearly year-round see larger savings.
- Variable-speed and inverter systems: these adjust output to the load, often improving comfort and humidity control as well as efficiency.
- Available rebates or incentives: check with your utility and current federal programs.
Efficiency depends on installation too
A high SEER2 rating is a lab result. Real-world efficiency depends on proper sizing, correct refrigerant charge, good airflow and sealed ductwork. An oversized system or leaky ducts can erase much of the benefit of high-efficiency equipment. See why sizing matters and our ductwork installation service.
Bottom line
Every new system must meet the Southeast minimum. Whether a higher-efficiency model makes sense depends on your home, your usage and your budget. A licensed contractor can compare options and estimated operating costs with you.
